ELI5, what was the deal with the Internet Explorer lawsuit?
UPDATE: I think I understand now. So browsers were apparently paid products at the time, which I didn't know... But thinking about it again, it makes sense. Including their own for free would've definitely given them an advantage, seeing how we're more likely to take something that's free than paid. Look at the mobile games market, for example.
Also, Microsoft decided to do some things with their browser to make it incompatible with the rest of them. I'm willing to bet they wish they never tried that when the Goggle virus hit IE6... HARD. It relied on Windows exclusive feature to infect computers, iirc. //

I feel like I'm too young to understand what happened here. Apparently, Microsoft got sued for including Internet Explorer with Windows, starting with 95. It was an antitrust lawsuit, and it had something to do with eliminating competition. Although I can see how that is, I still have one question: what other choices were there?
The Internet was becoming increasingly relevant during the 90s, and while some ISPs like AOL put you in their own walled garden, others gave you little to no software. You'd need some kind of browser, right? Even with how garbage IE was, it was better than nothing.
