Textured grip tape

I'm an ex cyclist, and I absolutely loved lizard skins. does anybody know the reason behind thinner thickness tape in paddles/bats? I see lizard skins carries a bat grip half the thickness, 1.6 vs. 3.2. but theoretically, the thicker the grip the more shock absorption.
