In the Philippines, there’s a super common belief that almost everyone follows, even if they don't really want to. It’s called "Pagpag," and it’s the idea that you can’t go straight home after visiting a wake or a funeral. The tradition says you have to make a detour—usually to a convenience store or a fast-food joint—to "shake off" any spirits or bad luck that might be hitching a ride on your back. The goal is to confuse the soul of the person who passed away so they don’t follow you into your house and bring misfortune to your family.
Even though it’s a huge part of our culture, I’ve never really been able to get on board with it. Logically, it just doesn't make much sense to me that a spirit capable of following a person across a whole city would suddenly get "lost" just because someone stopped to buy a bag of chips or a soda. If anything, it feels a bit disrespectful to the people we are mourning; if we believe our loved ones are at peace, why should we be so afraid that they’d follow us home like a curse? On a practical level, after a long, emotional day at a wake, the last thing anyone needs is to loiter around a gas station when they could be at home resting and cleaning up. I think our connection to those we’ve lost should be about love and good memories, not about being scared of a supernatural "hitchhiker" that can be fooled by a quick trip to a 24-hour store.
