cIn case it wasn't obvious by now, they did NOT scrap the Born Again episodes they had previously shot - What we should expect for the rest of Season 1 as well as Season 2
I see many people thinking that the old Born Again footage was completely scrapped and the show was rewritten and reshot from scratch. I don't know why so many people have this impression, since it was mentioned in the original report that they were keeping most footage they already shot, but in case some people are still confused, let's look at exactly what happened!
# Chris Ord and Matt Corman's version was not "bad" per se
The original version of Born Again created by Chris Ord and Matt Corman was never said by any report to be "bad". What was said in the original report and has been repeated in interviews afterwards is that the original series was not gonna keep 100% of the Defenders Saga canon and had a much different tone than the old Netflix series.
Namely:
* Due to Foggy's death causing Matt to hang up the suit, Matt wouldn't suit up as Daredevil until Episode 4. The first 3 episodes also had much less action in general and the the series had toned down its violence and gritty tone compared to the Netflix show. It's unclear whether the final fight of Episode 2 was in the original cut at all or whether maybe a more toned down version of it had been shot instead. It's also unclear whether Matt will suit up earlier this time around, but at least we now have the opening sequence of Episode 1 and the closing sequence of Episode 2 to balance out the lack of violence during the "Trial of Hector Ayala" arc.
* Foggy's death originally happened off-screen and was only mentioned in the series, while Karen was nowhere to be seen and not even mentioned by Matt or Frank, implying she probably wouldn't have existed in this world. As I said before, the previous creatives of the show had decided to not keep 100% of the Defenders Saga canon. Instead they would pick and choose which stuff to keep and would create a new, fresh version of Daredevil with a new cast and a new story. The only returning cast member apart from Matt and Fisk would have been Jon Bernthal's Punisher.
Due to those reasons, Feige and the other producers thought the show wasn't working and that it didn't feel much like the Netflix Daredevil show. Thus, they decided to hire new showrunner Dario Scardapane, completely and officially canonise the Defenders Saga and bring back Foggy, Karen and Bullseye.
# The previous crew had already filmed 6 episodes, which they couldn't just throw to the trash-bin
Filming those 6 episodes cost millions of dollars and Marvel/Disney couldn't just throw them away. That would have been logistically impossible.
Instead, Dario Scardapane wrote a new Episode 1 which showed Foggy's death on-screen, tied up the loose ends of DDS3 with Bullseye's return and set up the introduction of the new cast more smoothly instead of just jumping right into all the new stuff like the original version was supposed to do.
Dario along with staff writers Jesse Wigutow and Heather Bellson also rewrote parts of the already filmed 6 episodes which were then reshot in order to add more action and make them more gritty and along the same tone as the Netflix series.
More specifically, Episode 3 which premieres next week, is the only episode from Ord and Corman's bunch where one of the new writers (Jesse Wigutow) got a writing credit on, meaning she rewrote at least 1/3rd of the episode. The rest of the episodes were mostly kept intact.
They probably also rewrote stuff which might have contradicted the Defenders Saga or maybe added more connections to those series, but that remains to be seen.
Then Dario, Jesse and Heather also wrote a new 2-part finale where they brought back Karen and Bullseye on top of culminating all the plots which had started in the already filmed 6 episodes (White Tiger, Punisher, Muse)
# They might not have changed much for Season 1, but Season 2 will probably be much closer to the Netflix series
According to Marvel Television Head Brad Winderbaum, both Karen AND Foggy will be back for Season 2. He also said that they're trying to find ways to bring back the rest of the Defenders cast and it's not impossible that some of them will be re-introduced in Born Again Season 2. Dario Scardapane is clearly trying to create a continuation of the Defenders Saga the best he can, even with the barrier of the previously shot episodes which tried to do something different.
# How Foggy might be alive
As some fans have already noticed, the street number of the Nelson, Murdock and Page offices in the beginning of the episode is ***468***. In Daredevil Issue #468 alled "The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson", Foggy is stabbed while visiting Matt in prison and Matt stops hearing his heartbeat, exactly like it happened in the first episode of the series as well.
However, it's later revealed that he didn't actually die, but his heart was restarted on the operating table and the FBI offered him to fake his death and go into witness protection until his killer is arrested.
The bigger twist is that Vanessa Fisk was actually the mastermind behind Foggy's fake murder, as Foggy's apparent death is part of a bigger plan that involved sending Matt Murdock to prison and replacing Daredevil with Iron Fist, all before her death from a terminal illness.
Something similar could be revealed to have been the case during the finale which would leave the audience with a cliffhanger for Season 2 and would be a way to bring back Foggy to the main cast next year.
# What you should expect from the rest of Season 1
Considering some plot points of the original series had leaked a couple of years ago, this is what you should expect from the rest of the season \[SPOILERS AHEAD, only look if you wanna know\]
>!Episodes 3 and 4 focus on Hector Ayala's trial, and Matt succeeds in proving his innocence, but as soon as Hector gets out, one of the NYPD's crooked cops kills Hector while wearing the Punisher's costume.!<
>!This brings back Frank Castle in episode 5 who is enraged with dirty cops misusing his symbol, but at the same time, the death of Hector, seemingly on the hands of a vigilante, prompts Fisk to finally enact his anti-vigilante policy and to create an anti-vigilante NYPD task-force, led by Nolan North. Episodes 5-7 focus on Punisher's arc of hunting these cops down and Matt, suited up as Daredevil again after over a year, trying to keep him in check.!<
>!In the meantime, Muse is slowly built up in the background, which prompts Matt and Fisk to work together in order to stop him. Another White Tiger, Ava Ayala, Hector's sister, also comes along in order to avenge her brother's death. All this along with Karen and Bullseye's return will culminate in the 2-part finale.!<
