Appreciation for Spider Man and mental illness. Spoiler’s…

Appreciation for Spider Man and mental illness.

Spoiler’s obviously.

In all the talk of ‘how great’ the new spider man movie is (which I 100% agree with), a topic I don’t see discussed is how it depicts Spider Man’s depression.

Most people see depression as ‘extreme sadness’, ‘lazy/lethargic’, ‘emo’ or ‘suicidal’.

What this movie shows are symptoms less observed but common.

Self Isolation - Pushing those away that have a genuine care or want to care. Frank. The Police Commissioner. Black Widow. He purposefully keeps them at arms length.

The sense of ‘I don’t deserve friendship/goodness’ - A piece of the self isolation. It’s not just to ‘protect others’, but it’s that he sees aunt may in all of them. That he is the cause of the pain and that drives the self isolation despite them wanting to be let in.

Prioritizing others to the point of neglecting yourself - we see this that regardless of how injured Peter is, he pushes himself beyond reason. Beyond ‘great power, great responsibility”. He’s not suicidal but feels a desire to suppress his own needs for the greater good. Similar to the sense of not feeling deserving of good. ‘Sometimes spider man has to do things that break peter’s heart’.

He ultimately overcomes this things but finally opening up to others, not always a way to resolve depression, but definitely a start to share your thoughts, concerns, and burdens with those that clearly want to be in your life.

I am not a psychologist and purely speaking from my own experiences and life of depression. Seek help if you need it.
But it was eye opening to see these other symptoms without relying on the old tropes for depression in recent modern media.

Thank you Marvel/Sony.
