#earn activity

That “parentified kid” experience is real, and it cuts deep for a lot of people — especially in places where family pressure, financial stress, or cultural expectations make kids grow up overnight.

The Moment:
I remember being around 10 or 11, sitting at the table while adults talked about money problems. Instead of being sent to play, I was asked what we should cut from the budget. I also helped my younger siblings with homework, made sure they ate, and sometimes calmed my parents down during arguments. I wasn’t asked to be a kid — I was expected to be “mature.”

How It Felt:
Back then, I felt proud… but also heavy. Like my chest carried something invisible. I acted strong, but inside I was anxious all the time. I remember feeling older than my classmates, like I couldn’t relate to their “normal” problems. It was like wearing a mask of responsibility that never came off.

Impact Now:
Now I notice I struggle with boundaries. I over-help. I feel guilty resting. I become the “therapist friend” automatically. Sometimes I feel burnt out even when I haven’t done anything huge — just emotional labor. Trusting others to handle their own mess? That’s still hard.

One Takeaway:
I learned that being responsible isn’t the same as being responsible for everyone. I’m practicing saying, “That’s not mine to carry.” I’m also trying to reconnect with things I missed — laughing freely, doing something silly, not always being the strong one.
