how do you play the "quick wrist flickers" at the net?
I play at a 4.5 level. There is an Asian gentleman I play against occasionally who has a table tennis background and is incredibly deceptive hitting speedups from the kitchen line. His wrist flick is so fast that you can barely see it (like Gabe Tardio), and he can direct the ball in a wide range of directions and heights in front of him; and not only that, but he drives it with a range of speeds and spins that make it almost impossible for me to judge where to put my paddle to counter the ball, no matter how ready I am and regardless of the fact I know it's coming. He also does a variety of super-fast body feints with the shot too, just to add an extra unwanted degree of difficulty to tracking it.
I've tried taking a couple of steps back, but that doesn't seem to help--the ever-changing ball arc, direction, and speed, combined with the feints, make it just too unpredictable. Now, I grant that I'm slowing down reflex-wise (I'm 55), but I feel like I should be able to do something better against this. Any practical suggestions from folks who have faced this type of thing before? #sport source
