My son’s first backpacking trip in the Whites didn’t go as planned
Took my son on his first full backpacking trip in the White Mountains.
The original plan was to start from the Basin Trail and work our way toward the Kinsmans, but after the rain the day before, the first major water crossing was too high to safely continue. We ended up turning around, rerouting toward Lonesome Lake, camping for the night, getting rained into our old tent, and still making it up Cannon the next day.
It was one of those trips where the plan changed almost immediately, but it turned into a great lesson for him: the mountains don’t really care about your plan, and sometimes adjusting is part of the adventure.
Also learned that my old 15-year-old tent may have finally earned retirement.
