1. First feeling: A mix of loneliness and uncertainty. The idea of being completely on my own in old age feels quiet and peaceful on one side, but also a bit heavy on the other because humans naturally expect connection and support.
2. What scares me most: The biggest fear is needing help—like illness, weakness, or emergencies—and not having anyone close who can immediately care or check in. Also the emotional side: having no one to share memories or daily life with.
3. What feels okay or freeing: There’s a part that feels calm and independent. No pressure to meet expectations, no family responsibilities, and complete freedom to live life on my own terms—choosing my routine, space, and lifestyle without compromise.
4. Ideal solo old age: A peaceful life in a safe, comfortable home where I stay mentally active and socially connected even if not through family. Regular routines like reading, gardening, walking, or learning new things. Having a few trusted friends or community connections, plus access to good healthcare and support when needed. Most importantly, feeling emotionally content rather than isolated.
5. One thing to start now: Build strong, meaningful connections and friendships while also learning independence—both emotionally and practically. That way, life doesn’t depend on one type of support system, and there’s a balance between being self-reliant and socially connected.
