A few weeks ago I scored some pallets off the curb, intending to feed them to my woodstove, then I noticed that they had been artistically woodburned for some sort of display and decided to put them to a better use.
As luck would have it, I had torn out a built-in corner cupboard in my kitchen that left nothing but bare studs over a 28" span. A quick calculation showed I'd have juuuuuust enough pallet wood to fill in the gap, so I set about prying those bad boys apart! (The wood wasn't pine, but rather some close-grained white variety like ash, and they gave me a bit of a fight, so I enlisted my boyfriend's help for this step, heh.)
I then picked the best-looking slats, cut them to length, sanded the exposed edges slightly just to clean them up, dabbed the raw edges with a walnut gel stain, wiped them down with soapy water to get rid of any sawdust or dirt, and nailed them to the studs. I started from the top, leveled the first piece then just filled in the rest, trying the boards out first to find ones that fit together nicely as the thickness of the wood and the horizontal edges weren't uniform. It was a bit like putting together a (not very difficult, lol) jigsaw puzzle and the outcome was as envisioned. #diy source
