“The Natural" is a 1984 American sports film based on Bernard Malamud 's 1952 novel of the same name , directed by Barry Levinson , and starring Robert Redford , Robert Duvall , Glenn Close , Kim Basinger , Wilford Brimley , Barbara Hershey , Robert Prosky and Richard Farnsworth . Like the novel, the film recounts the experiences of Roy Hobbs, an individual with great "natural" baseball talent, spanning the decades of Roy's career. I'm not a great sports' fan but this film tells the story of setbacks, perserverance, hope, successes and joy embodied in Roy Hobbs whose boyhood dream of becoming a baseball player was derailed but reawakened later in life. He uses a childhood bat which he had fashioned from an oak tree; it seems to assure Hobbs' performance as a player, lending the story an almost divine dimension. This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Highly recommended!
