Opinion: Captain Marvel should’ve been introduced after the events of Avengers: Endgame, not before.
Carol Danvers is a profound character in the comics. A long history, but a great character overall.
Sadly, her portrayal in the MCU, especially in the first Captain Marvel movie, didn’t do her justice. Not Brie Larson’s fault btw; the writing for the character just wasn’t compelling. And the film delivered a point-blank buckshot to Nick Fury’s credibility, with the eye-patch retcon. I also can’t seem to find her narrative significance to the Infinity Saga. Her origin is tied to an Infinity stone, so there’s an explanation for her involvement. But she doesn’t effectively change any outcomes. She just prolongs them. Basically, this story didn’t need her.
The Avengers didn’t need her to beat Thanos. Not the first time on the distant planet, or the second time on Earth. Her inclusion just didn’t ADD anything.
And this is why I believe (with the benefit of hindsight) that her character should’ve been reserved for a later phase, like Phase 4 or 5.
Carol is a competitive, headstrong, independent character, sure. She’s a hard shell, but underneath it lies a compassionate, soft core. She’s blunt and sarcastic, but she also has a sense of humor and gets humbled, learns her lesson, and uses it to beat the big bad. She is prideful but endearing, like Thor. She is someone that you can build a sector of the MCU around.
Especially with the end of the Guardians franchise, Carol would’ve been a perfect torchbearer for Marvel’s space adventures.
Narratively, I think she would’ve made the most impact if introduced after Endgame. #video #movies
