ELI5= Why would a tidally locked earth have a burning side while the other is freezing?

i know this is kinda stupid but it’s never boiling hot in the day (except summer) and never freezing cold in winter, so how could a tidally locked earth have temperatures in the day and night multiplied by 100/-100 ??
