Cooler for hike-in camping… worth it or just extra weight?
Did a short hike-in camp recently (around 8 km in, one night) and realized my food setup wasn’t great. I used a small insulated bag in my pack, which was okay, but by the time we reached camp, things weren’t as cold as I’d hoped. Now I’m thinking about getting a proper cooler, but I’m not sure if it makes sense for hike-in trips. The hard coolers seem better for keeping ice, but they look heavy and bulky to carry that distance. Soft coolers seem more practical, just not sure how well they hold up on rough trails. For those who do hike-in camping, do you usually carry a cooler or just pack things differently? Are soft coolers actually enough for 1–2 night trips, or do they fall short in real use? Also, anything you’ve tried and would completely avoid? I’ve been looking around at different options and even came across some cheaper ones while browsing sites like Alibaba, but it’s honestly hard to tell what’s actually durable and what just looks solid in photos.
