Is it a waste of time to listen to or transcribe music beyond my level?
I play guitat and still pretty new to jazz. There’s something I’ve been struggling with lately. I’m a huge Keith Jarrett fan, and he’s probably been my biggest inspiration in jazz. But I’ve heard people say that listening to music that’s too far beyond your current level of understanding isn’t very helpful for learning.
Obviously, on a technical level, a lot of what Keith plays is way beyond what I can really understand as a beginner. But when I have limited time to simply listen to music, I still just want to listen to the music I love. Is there anything wrong with that?
I’ve also really wanted to transcribe Keith’s solo on **“**Billie’s Bounce**”** recently (I’m transcribing Charlie Parker as well). I know that maybe it isn’t the most efficient thing for me to study at my current level. I might not understand the theoretical meaning behind all those notes, but I really want to figure them out on my guitar, feel what they sound like under my fingers, and get a sense of his phrasing and expression.
Do you think spending time on something like that could actually be a waste of time for a beginner? #music #audio source
