I want to express a few opposing opinions regarding some common criticisms about Brave New World.
Specifically the use of Hulk villains, Sam’s lack of serum, and the post credit scene.
1. I personally believe that at this point in the ongoing narrative of MCU world 616, Sam makes the most sense as an adversary for Thaddeus Ross. As in, he’s literally the only hero protagonist left that has any real beef with him. Tony, Wanda, and Nat are dead, Clint is largely retired and not emotionally invested, Scott Lang barely knows who he even is, and Bruce Banner has simply outgrown him in every way. Bruce has spent years just keeping himself in a chill and level mindset since he and Hulk merged. He very likely doesn’t think of Ross at all, and has long forgiven him.
That leaves Sam. The only remaining active Avenger and lone holdout of the heroes Ross imprisoned in 2016 after the airport fight. As such, the only remaining main character left to have at odds with Ross.
Samuel Sterns ends up being an extension of that. Everything he did was to take down Ross. He was the only character left in universe who could believably turn Ross into the Red Hulk. Most importantly, Ross is literally the only character Sterns would logically be at odds with. Banner probably barely remembers the guy overall.
Finally, thematically the character of Ross also tied super well into Sam’s methods and training. He was a military councilor before he was Falcon. Ross was the definition of a mentally damaged product of the military. His entire arc was a natural progression of Incredible Hulk (peak rage and capture of Sterns), Civil War (direct comments about multiple heart surgeries), and even Black Widow (Nat stating he looked outright awful).
Sam played right into that, and it’s how he won.
2. Sam not having the serum was both a massive point of contention but also a major plot point in the movie. How could Sam be Cap without the serum? Well, the movie handled that question extremely well, building off of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. What I’ve loved about Sam’s methods thus far is that his background in mental health has been his biggest strength thus far. As of yet his sole personal villain has been Karlee Morganthou; who he spent the whole time connecting to. He used this to win over Isaiah Washington, Ross on the ship at Celestial Island, and ultimately he talked down Red Hulk the same way.
Even outside of that, his combat methods are exactly what he needs. He is essentially Batman with his vibranium suit and wings, his drones, and his shield. He is highly devoted to his training and maintaining of his physique.
Most importantly, he fights with tactics over brawn. He spent the whole Red Hulk fight on the defense. He was constantly running away, and only was able to land hits due to having vibranium. He basically spent the whole fight being one wrong move away from death. I’d even argue the serum wouldn’t have helped much if he had it. Emil Blonsky didn’t fair well with Cap level strength. Sam won from evasion, and as mentioned earlier his empathy and skill as a counselor. This is an awesome handling of the situation, and haters are just ignoring that.
3. Finally, we have the credits scene. I’ve seen a weird amount of complaints about it, but the importance that’s lost on those people will be my focus. It objectively didn’t tease anything that we the audience didn’t already know. I get that’s a fact. What’s significant isn’t the information though, it’s the characters discussing it. As of yet only select characters have been made aware of the multiverse, the TVA, and the looming conflict ahead, and many of them aren’t even 616 characters. At this time, the more down to earth 616 heroes have no idea what’s coming. Scott Lang has definitely kept his last adventure to himself. Spider-Man has gone underground. Strange not only always keeps things to himself, but he also hasn’t been in 616 for at least two years.
Sam Wilson is both the new Captain America and the founder of the new Avengers, and he first learned about this from Samuel fucking Sterns. His face said everything. This moment is a big deal, regardless of personal opinions.
In closing, I do overall see both sides of the opinions on this movie. As a Cap movie it feels weird, as a Hulk sequel it feels weird, and for the diluted people who think every post Endgame Marvel film should have the same stakes, I imagine this movie would be a letdown for their absurd standards.
For this long time MCU fan; this movie is a return to form. It brings huge connectivity to MCU 616. It’s grounded like a phase 1 or 2 film. It gives payoff to the long ignored Incredible Hulk, while also acknowledging the consequences of the Eternals, and most importantly allowed Sam Wilson to prove he doesn’t need powers or long term lore to be Captain America. Bucky was right on target when he said Steve was someone to look up to as a symbol, but Sam is someone any regular human can aspire to be with hard work and strong desire.
For me, this movie is the most classic MCU a movie has been in ages. Fuck the haters. They are not all racist, but the ones who aren’t still seem to forget that heroes without powers have always accomplished the impossible in the MCU. Stop being haters, stop expecting comic accuracy, and take the stories as they are. You’ll be happier in the end.
