replace with a French cleat and I've got a few concerns before I get started:
\- When I hold the cleat to the brick, it's not perfectly flat against it. If I tighten the anchors through the cleat all the way, it'll be slightly bowed. Will this be an issue for actually hanging the mantel on it? At the very least, the mantle won't be completely flush against the brick.
\- Usually I would drill the pilot holes evenly spaced, but I'm assuming it's more important that they're not too close to the edge of the brick or into the mortar. I've read I should stay at least 1.25" from the edge of the brick. Does that sound right? I'm using 1/4" x 2-1/4" sleeve anchors.
\- I've hung floating shelfs on drywall before, and they always have the tiniest dip down even when mounting the bracket into studs. Should I get some shims and tilt the cleat a couple of degrees upward to keep this from being an issue? Maybe I should hang it first and if there's a slight dip, I can always loosen the anchors, tilt the cleat with shims, and retighten the anchors?
Any other tips or things to address before diving in?
