How I Built a Fence on a Sloped Lot Using a DIY Laser Tool

Hey everyone!
I wanted to share how I built a fence around my property (\~0.75 acres).

https://preview.redd.it/cs2ktk3kbexg1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2403b909c00a10654f5b8c9f7bb5774a17c3f5ac

Quick disclaimer:

* I have no construction background
* zero real building experience
* and before this, the most complex thing I built was a dog house 😄

I’m actually a software engineer working on video games.

# The Goal

The goal sounded simple:

* build a fence around the property
* finish it within \~2 weeks (my vacation)
* keep it budget-friendly
* but still make it look clean and nice

# Problem #1 — Sloped Ground

The first issue I ran into — the land isn’t flat. There’s about a **0.5 meter (\~1.5 ft) elevation difference** across the lot.

So the question became: how do you build a fence on uneven ground and still make it look good?

There are a few common approaches:

**Option 1 — Follow the ground.** Didn’t like it — looks crooked.

**Option 2 — Angled rails.** Also not great — visually messy, and harder to work with later.

**The Approach I Chose.**

This is what I was aiming for:

* all posts aligned at the top
* rails perfectly horizontal
* clean, professional look

Best option both visually and practically.

# Problem #2 — How to Align the Posts?

Okay, concept decided. Next challenge:

**How do you actually align all posts at the same height on a slope?**

I don't have a laser level, and professional services are expensive.

So… time to improvise 😄

**The Idea — Use a Laser**

https://preview.redd.it/8ht1roxpcexg1.png?width=808&format=png&auto=webp&s=411966d76795c90726dce9a8f7eb98381eb86bf6

At some point I thought:

>What if I just shine a laser from the first post to the last one
and align everything to that line?

Sounds simple — but there’s a catch: the lot is \~60×50 meters, you need to aim very precisely.

# DIY Solution

So me and my dad came up with this:

https://preview.redd.it/debar3q3dexg1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f91375b237e49603fa06968dd7e938899c60e6b

The idea:

* mount it to the first post
* attach a laser pointer on top
* use two adjustment bolts:
* bottom bolt → left/right adjustment
* top bolt → up/down adjustment

This gives very precise control over the laser.

Honestly, it worked way better than expected.

# Building Process (Family Mode)

This turned into a full family project:

* my wife https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4OV-PTmU0BY helped a lot (and filmed everything)
* kids https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Hi2KYwLI3RE were around “helping” 😄

End result:

* straight top line
* clean look
* even though the ground is sloped

# What I Learned

* one good reference line solves most problems
* you don’t need expensive tools
* simple DIY solutions can work great
* building with family makes it way more fun
