Title: War of the Worlds (2005)
Steven Spielberg is the director of this adaption of H.G. Wellsโ book . Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier , a divorced crane operator and imperfect father in New Jersey, in Wells' classic science fiction book. Ray is forced to take on the role of protector for his estranged children, younger Rachel (Dakota Fanning ) and teenage Robbie (Justin Chatwin), as bizarre lightning storms set the appearance of huge tripod-like extraterrestrial war machines.
Ray and his kids set out on a risky and desperate quest for survival as the tripods use their highly developed weapons to launch deadly strikes that vaporize people and destroy entire cities. They meet other survivors who are desperate and see the alien invaders' overwhelming might as they make their way through increasingly hazardous and chaotic environments.
By highlighting the terror, panic, and resiliency of common people facing an unthinkable disaster, the movie highlights the invasion from a human point of view. Spielberg shows the scary size of the alien machines and the devastation they cause with powerful visual effects. The sound design, which conveys a sense of dread and the alien character of the invaders, is especially powerful.
