My city just opened a brand new stadium and new farm team for the Rangers. Hub City Spartanburgers. I am going to go to the job fair they are having today and I am going to do anything I can to get a spot on the grounds crew. I haven’t done any grounds keeping at fields that require a ton of work and skill, just helping my dad maintain the 5 little league fields and my grandpa at a golf course (never got to mess with the fairways or greens but they don’t gotta know that). I’m so nervous about this because this is a job that could turn my entire life around. I was an extremely talented SS and pitcher and had hit 91 as a sophomore and then an unsuccessful Tommy John recovery due to my youth. UCL tear that also ripped through the inner elbow bone and required a few screws and ton of extra rehab and I never passed another physical while in school. I was devastated and developed a drug addiction with the pain pills from surgery and found myself in prison before I even graduated high school. 17-21 years old I was in prison, and I got out and fell flat on my face and sank deeper into addiction, now meth and fentanyl. I’m clean now going on my 2nd year, I just buried my mom and my grandpa, my fiancé just moved out and I’m not enjoying my life at all. I have clawed my way through the past couple of weeks and it’s been the hardest thing to remain clean. But I knew if I did that I would get a great opportunity for something and I think this is my opportunity. I would give absolutely ANYTHING in the world if I could find a way to be around the game again. I know if I can just land the job that I would catch on and be one of the best groundskeepers there and I would put more time and work into the job because it means so much more to me than just being able to work at a minor league stadium. This is my livelihood, my childhood, my chance to redeem myself and it’s likely the only chance I will get to return to the game in a meaningful way. I am looking for any advice, any suggestions, any interview tips, how to dress, if there’s anything I could say that would impress the staff and convince them to give me a shot. Anything helps, but please don’t just say “you got no shot without a degree or experience on a major sports field” I am not accepting no as an answer and I am not trying to read anything that will create doubt in my chances. Thank you for reading this post, I appreciate you if you decide to comment, and God Bless the fans of the greatest sport in the world. #sport source
