"Five Easy Pieces" is one of the most emotionally devastating movies ever and that's what makes it great.
It's somewhat annoying that this movie tends to be known best only for one scene, the legendary diner scene where Jack Nicholson tries to get toast for a substitute. ("I want you to hold it between your knees.") Sure, it's a great scene, but it overshadows a film that is so much more and is one of the most existentially despairing films I've ever seen. Nicholson's Bobby Dupea is one of those characters who doesn't seem to fit in anywhere, neither in the affluent family of musicians he comes from, nor the blue-collar types he tries to blend in with (especially Karen Black as his sweetly dim-witted girlfriend). He's forever searching for meaning and place and never able to find it. And this leads up to that despairing open ending, which seems to imply the character will never find what he's looking for and will be doomed to wander until the day he dies a lonely death.
Not the most cheery film, but damn is it good. Watching Jack Nicholson in this is watching him become a star right in front of our eyes. Some of his best work here, especially the aforementioned diner scene and the scene where he tries to explain his life to his father. Just don't come in expecting a nice, neat happy ending.
