mThe narrative of Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4 and Black Panther 2 underperforming at the box office
Let's get two things out of the way:
1. DS 2 and BP 2 made more than *The Batman* (the first live action solo Batman movie in 10 years). Thor 4 also made more than *The Batman* when you remove China total because Thor 4 wasn't released there.
2. **A sequel making more than the previous movie is an exception not the norm:** The Empire Strikes Back, Temple of Doom, Jurassic Park: TLW, Back to the Future 2, Harry Potter 2, LOTR: The two Towers, Spider-Man 2, etc. made LESS than their previous installments.
# Doctor Strange 2 ($955M worldwide)
* wasn't released in Russia and China. Banned in some Middle East markets due to the inclusion of LGBT character.
* Doctor Strange (2016) made $109M in China and $22M in Russia. So DS 2 would have easily crossed a billion if it released in those markets.
* DS 2 made almost $300M more than the first. That number would have been almost $375M-$400M more if it was released in all markets where the first one was.
* Captain America: Civil War(basically Avengers 2.5) ade $956M without Russia and China. Exact same as DS 2.
# Thor: Love and Thunder ($760M worldwide)
* wasn't released in Russia and China. Banned in Malaysia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Qatar and Jordan due to LGBT elements.
* The Batman without Russia and China - $747M. Thor 4 made more.
* Thor: Ragnarok without Russia and China - $720M. Again Thor 4 made more.
# Black Panther Wakanda Forever ($859M worldwide)
* It has 'A' Cinemascore and 94% verified RT audience score. The Batman got 'A-' on CS and 87% on verified RT audience score. BP 2 is the most well received Comic Book Movie in the post pandemic era after Spider-Man No Way Home.
* This is a unique case of 'a sequel without its lead actor or main character'. You know what usually happens when you make a sequel without the lead actor or the main character?
