April 22, 2026… #movieoftheday is Bas les cœurs (aka A Child's Battle) (full movie) (2011).
Bas les cœurs is a French television film directed by Robin Davis, based on the novel of the same name by Georges Darien, and broadcast on May 25, 2011, on France 2.
Based in Versailles, the Barbier family confidently awaits the War of 1870 against the Prussians.
The main characters praise the French army and bet on when the Marseillaise will be sung in Berlin. Professor Pion, Madame Arnal, Grandfather Toussaint, Beaugrain the retired captain, the tobacconist and, especially, the anarchist Merlin become part of the tapestry of History.
Everyone applauds the victories and stubbornly refuses the defeats. The bourgeoisie has only one goal: to survive the clashes of the Commune. In short, survive at any cost! Even dishonor.
Jean, 12, the son of the family, views this cowardly and pitiful world with disappointment and disillusion. Fortunately, his elderly neighbor, Father Merlin, eases his suffering and tries to put him back on the right path: a disgust for war, the deception of patriotism and a love for generosity and forgiveness.
