Road to Avengers Doomsday: Ant-Man
I’m not going to be coy, the Ant-Man films are probably my least favorite movies in the whole MCU. There are some good moments in this movie, but the following films I view in a far more negative-mixed light. This is also one of the Marvel films that we were kind of robbed of something spectacular with Edgar Wright originally attached to direct. It’s one of those moments that we can look back on and ponder how this movie would have turned out.
The overall premise of these movies isn’t bad. And these movies are at their best when they commit to the creativity that shrinking as a superpower in a comic book movie offers. The shrinking elements and the quantum realm stuff are all great. There’s some fun and cool set pieces that play around with size and scale and humor. With the highlight for me being the briefcase battle between Scott and Darren. The perfect mixture of humor and action. I also enjoy the heist movie elements which is stressed by the score by Christophe Beck which is absolutely wonderful and actually memorable. And then there’s Luis (Michael Peña) who absolutely steals the show. He would have been the perfect candidate to star in a Marvel One Shot or a short of some kind.
Like a lot of Marvel movies that try a bit too hard on the comedic end, the humor in this movie sometimes misses the mark at times for me. I am not a big fan of Evangeline Lily as Hope in this film. I see what they are going for, but the jaded, dour, antagonistic, almost one noted portrayal of the character does more harm than good. Darren Cross is also not a compelling character. Another one noted and cliched white collar villain. He seems like a cross between Lex Luthor and Dick Jones from Robocop. And the plot, while at times having the benefits of heist film elements still is rather bland and by the numbers and boring.
