I love John Walker’s reaction to the “New Avengers” moment. He definitely had flashbacks to being Captain America, along with his struggles with public backlash and imposter syndrome.
Out of all the members, US Agent/John Walker’s blank expression after Val’s announcement was always the one that stood out to me the most. It was sort of comedic, like he just wasn’t totally all there in that moment, or was completely spaced out & confused.
After some thoughts, I came to realize that the ending of “Thunderbolts\*” shared a lot of parallels with when Walker was first announced as the new Captain America in “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”. It’s a very similar moment— a newly government-funded hero being publicly introduced to the world through media, as they adopt a very familiar & prestigious title.
Yet, John’s attitude contrasts greatly between the two separate moments. He had a prideful demeanour and cocky wink as Cap, but seemed more distant and jaded in “Thunderbolts\*”.
The negative outcry and signs of rejection (B-vengers) after they become the New Avengers must feel like familiar territory to him. He struggled with the pressures of adopting such a renowned title and heroic role, as well as trying to live up to Steve (even to the point where his need for approval started to feel like an unhealthy obsession). So I wouldn’t be too surprised if this moment brought back a bit of his past trauma.. like a “not again” type of reaction. Though I also think that the novelty of being an “Avenger” wouldn’t really mean much to him anymore as much as it would’ve used to, so he doesn’t show as much excitement as Alexei & Yelena.
I also realize that John was probably more prepared for the Captain America announcement , and was able to out on his best metaphorical mask. I still think it’s a nice comparative moment to see how he seems to be more cautious and distrustful of the situation that is unraveling and not quick to celebrate or smile, knowing his history. #video #movies
