Label Collision / Avoidance Algorithm Progression → Accidental Art

This was some unexpectedly interesting output from a diagnostic plot, as part of a 1D label placement algorithm implemented in the aqp package for R https://ncss-tech.github.io/aqp/ . The x-axis marks iterations of the algorithm from left to right. The y-axis are label positions along the 1D labeling system. Colors represent the ideal ordering (warmer colors are lower values, cooler colors are higher values). The algorithm is based on a physical simulation of electrostatic charges and some additional constraints related to boundary conditions and rank ordering.

Initial label placement (left-hand side of each panel) was generated randomly in each of the four sub-figures. I find the smooth curves, tendency towards chaotic oscillation, and propagation of oscillations along the y-axis particularly interesting.

These figures were generated in R, colors are from the "Zissou 1" color palette of \`hcl.colors()\`.

Additional information on this and another 1D label placement algorithm are described here https://ncss-tech.github.io/aqp/articles/label-placement.html .
