The Rise of Female Leaders
While building a historical database of world leaders, I became curious about when women actually started becoming heads of state.
I grouped every **first accession to power** by 50-year periods, and the pattern was much more pronounced than I expected.
Female rulers certainly existed throughout history, but they were extremely rare until the second half of the 20th century. In my current dataset, more women reached power after 2000 than in many previous centuries combined.
The database currently contains around **1,500 presidents, monarchs and popes** from **66 countries**, and is still expanding, so the numbers will continue to evolve as more historical leaders are added.
I built an interactive page where you can explore every female leader individually.
Feedback is very welcome—especially if you know of countries or historical leaders that should be included.
