Making use of a 6” gap between a cabinet and the wall.
I’ve got a nook in my house that’s about 66” wide and 24” deep, which currently holds a built in desk, and upper cabinets. We’re going to remove the desk and cabinets and install a couple of floor to ceiling cabinets from IKEA.
The IKEA cabinets have a total exterior dimension of 60”, leaving me with 6” of extra space.
Originally, we were considering centering the cabinets and closing the gaps on either side of the cabinets to the wall with some trim. But I’d like to make better use of this space, especially since it’s big enough to stash a folding step ladder, or a broom or two, etc.
My question: what’s the best way to execute this? Do I leave the 6” gap between the cabinets? Off to one side? I kinda want to have a door on it, but I feel like a tall and skinny door would look weird and I’d have to build it myself. Any thoughts?
