Can I temporarily weld a metal tab onto a car body panel to attach my welder's ground clamp?
I'm going to be repairing some rust/damaged areas around the wheel wells of my van using a flux-core welder.
Some of the areas I'm going to be welding are awkward to reach, and there isn't a convenient place nearby to attach the welder's work/ground clamp.
Would it be okay to temporarily tack-weld a small piece of scrap steel onto the replacement panel, use that as the connection point for the work clamp while welding, and then cut/grind the temporary piece off once the repair is finished?
Is this a normal technique, or is there a better way of getting a good ground connection in awkward areas?
I'm mainly concerned about making sure the welding current has a good path and isn't travelling through other parts of the van. #diy source
