YSK: Before selling or recycling an old smart home device, factory resetting it from the app isn't always enough to erase your Wi-Fi credentials from the physical chip.

Many IoT and smart home devices (smart plugs, bulbs, old routers) store your home Wi-Fi network name and pre-shared key in unencrypted flash memory. Performing a software reset via an app often just clears user account bindings, leaving the network credentials accessible if someone extracts the flash storage physically using cheap hardware tools. To fully secure it, perform a manual hardware reset (usually holding a physical button for 15–30 seconds until the LED flashes a specific code) and remove the device from your router's authorized list.

Why YSK:

If an old smart device ends up in someone else's hands, stored Wi-Fi credentials can allow nearby bad actors to map or attempt access to your home network.
