ELI5: Weren't railguns supposed to replace space rockets?
Some years ago I read that electricity-powered railguns would be the next thing in space: greener, cheaper alternative to rockets. They have incredible accelerations, so humans can't take them, but fuel, food, etc., could be transported that way. Now there's talk about building a moon base... but no railguns. What happened?
