Noticed a rotting porch column today while doing some yard work.
It appears to made up of multiple boards put together. Most of it is solid, I poked it with a screw driver, but one of the pieces that make up the column is pretty rotten at the bottom, especially the bottom 8 inches or so. The right side if you are looking towards the house.
I would guess that metal bracket on the bottom that broke allowed water to get in. Probably due to snow being piled there for seeming all winter.
Can I just replace that rotten portion? Cut out 24” or so, just below the turned portion and replace with pressure treated? Water proof around the bottom and the broken bracket with something? Screw everything together, caulk, prime, and paint.
I’d rather avoid replacing the entire post if I can. I don’t know what is above the post. Peeling back those aluminum trim pieces and getting it jacked up seems like something that may get squirrelly quickly. Aluminum trim has never gone well for me.
If it does need to be replaced, what type of contractor? Siding / trim guy? #diy
