The funeral music for Maarva in Andor will always do it for me

The music that they play in Maarva's funeral march is absolutely incredible. The first part, the dirge, is beautiful in itself but I feel like it's supposed to also represent a funeral march for the way things were. The whole of Andor, after all, is about the dawning recognition that a resistance is necessary and coming soon, but also that with a resistance will come the destruction of the way things used to be. This part of the march is a lament of the death of what was and you can see that recognition on nearly every character's face. The song is full of sadness and melancholy and you get to literally watch the townspeople come together from all directions for this one final moment together as they line up for the first time as one group to face the picket line that has just been made opposite them. Even the different colors of the mourners outfits are to show the many different peoples that will have to come together to form the resistance. The sides are set.

Then the mournful music stops, and there's a moment of silence as the two sides face each other and you know there's got to be more. And sure enough, the music starts up again, but the tone is different. It's no longer somber, but instead defiant and of rising intensity. It's changed from a funeral dirge to a combative war march. I can almost feel vibes from the American Civil War here. It gets louder, faster, more insistent.

And all this leads to the speech and then the spark.

The fact that this show has the confidence to build tension with music from inside the show as opposed to playing music over a scene in post is just awesome. It shows an extraordinary amount of awareness and foresight into how they set this episode up, and it allows nearly every major character to have a moment of recognition and reflection of what is about to happen.
