Scorsese took the story of the great Lufthansa robbery captured in Nicholas Pileggi's book and gave us this great film, combining in its story a combination of intelligent sociological study, great black humor and innovative cinema, Goodfellas achieves something that only movies truly great things can achieve: becoming a film that is not only a work of art in itself but is also an excellent black comedy that manages to entertain the general public at the same time. Because of this achievement, and also because of its great influence on future filmmakers, Goodfellas is considered a cinematic gem, a cult film, and after The Godfather I and II it is in 3rd place in my personal top of films about gangsters and in my top 10 of the best movies that I have enjoyed throughout all my years.

Ray Liotta may seem at first like he wasn't the best choice to be the film's narrator and nominal hero. Henry Hill comes across as overly Hollywoodized and glamorous among this group of low-level Italian street thugs. However, Liotta's performance improves the overall impression by being very realistic, especially when he falls into addiction to the drugs he sold. Lorraine Bracco stands out with another great performance as Karen Hill, the young and innocent wife who gradually descends into the same pit of rottenness where her husband lives. Paul Sorvino also achieves a great performance as the local boss Paulie, I can't name them all but the film has a great supporting cast.

Another essential element of the success of the Goodfellas film is its large but magnificent collection of great acting talents. The most respectable of them is Robert De Niro, his character Jimmy, who turns out to be the calmest and most professional member of the criminal trio, is overshadowed by his two younger friends and colleagues. Joe Pesci won an Oscar for his supporting role as the homicidal psychopath Tommy, and his lines, including the improvisations, are probably the most memorable element of the film.
