What is this passage really for?

Ships don’t sink because of the water around them.

Ships sink because of the water that gets in them.

This passage is often used in conversations about trust—encouraging people not to let the betrayal or negativity of others “get inside” and damage them. And while that message has value, there’s a deeper truth that applies more universally to how we live day to day.

We don’t sink because of what’s happening around us—we sink because we let what’s happening around us influence what’s happening within us.

Most people live in a reactive state, letting the environment dictate their energy, emotions, and actions. Someone cuts them off in traffic, and they carry anger all day. A conversation doesn’t go their way, and they spiral into self-doubt. The economy shifts, and suddenly their confidence and joy collapse. This is the water getting inside.

Over time, we become so conditioned by our external circumstances that we forget we have a choice. We absorb the chaos, carry the weight, and lose sight of who we are and what we truly want. This catabolic energy—rooted in fear, frustration, and victimhood—creates complacency, dissatisfaction, and burnout.

But here’s the shift: You don’t have to let the outside world flood your inner world.

You can become the captain of your ship again.

Through mindfulness, conscious energy selection, and practicing emotional discipline, you create space between stimulus and response. You stop absorbing everything. You observe. You influence. You steer.

Gratitude, compassion, presence, and accountability—they become your lifeboats. You learn to seal the cracks before they become leaks.

If this message spoke to you or something within it resonated, I invite you to like and share it—because you never know who else might need to hear it today.

What strengthens you?

If you want to rise to the next level—whether in business, sports, or life—you have to stop taking the easy road. Comfort is not your friend; it’s your enemy. When you do the same thing every day, following the same unproductive routine, eating the same unhealthy food, thinking the same catabolic thoughts, you aren’t growing. You’re settling. And when you settle, you weaken yourself.

The real key to success isn’t control—it’s influence. You don’t control how hard the game gets, but you do influence how you respond to it. You have to be willing to step into uncertainty, to test yourself, to adapt. That’s what will make you great.

Epictetus said that when life throws challenges at you, think of it like an athlete facing a tougher opponent. You don’t get stronger by avoiding the fight—you get stronger by stepping into the ring, taking the hits, and learning how to move forward. Growth happens through resistance. Iron sharpens iron.

Too many people wait for the perfect moment, the easy opportunity. But success doesn’t come to those who wait. It comes to those who push themselves past their limits, who embrace difficulty, who refuse to let comfort dictate their choices.

So ask yourself—are you ready to rise? Are you willing to face discomfort, to take the harder path? Because that’s where real success is built.

If this reached you or there was something that truly resonated with you, please like and share in hopes this will maybe reach someone that it could help.

Daily Morbid Fact: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Ends (May 17, 1943)

On May 17, 1943, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a courageous but tragic act of resistance by the Jewish inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto against Nazi forces, came to a brutal end. The uprising had begun on April 19, 1943, as the ghetto residents fought to avoid being transported to extermination camps.

Despite their bravery, the poorly armed and vastly outnumbered fighters were eventually overwhelmed by the Nazis, who burned and demolished the ghetto. The uprising ended with the death or capture of thousands of Jews, but it remains a powerful symbol of resistance and the human spirit in the face of unimaginable oppression.

Reflect on the courage and sacrifice of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising's participants and share your thoughts or insights in the comments below.
