LUCAS: The U.S. Drone Inspired by Iran’s Shahed
During a recent media briefing about the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, Admiral Brad Cooper highlighted a drone currently being used by the U.S. military known as LUCAS .
Drones have become a major component of modern warfare, especially in the Middle East where Iran has reportedly deployed large numbers of unmanned aerial vehicles against regional targets. However, LUCAS stands out because of its unusual origin: it was designed after studying Iran’s well-known Shahed drone.
Reverse-Engineering the Shahed
According to the briefing, U.S. forces previously captured a Shahed drone. Military engineers analyzed the aircraft by dismantling it and examining its internal systems. Using insights from that analysis, they developed the LUCAS drone , a redesigned version adapted to U.S. military standards and technology.
This process of reverse engineering allowed engineers to understand the drone’s structure, flight systems, and combat capabilities, which helped shape the design of the American counterpart.
A Kamikaze-Style Weapon
LUCAS belongs to a category of drones often called loitering munitions . These drones are designed to fly toward a target and detonate upon impact. Unlike reconnaissance drones that return after a mission, kamikaze drones sacrifice themselves when striking their target.
The LUCAS drone reportedly costs about $35,000 per unit , making it relatively inexpensive compared with many other advanced military systems. Despite its lower cost, it can still carry various payloads and communication equipment depending on mission requirements.
