‘79 Chalone Pinot Noir
Perfect provenance aged domestic wines are something special, and it’s hard to do much better than a ‘79 Chalone.
I’ve had the pleasure of tasting a few such wines from the likes of Mount Eden Vineyards, Hanzell, and Kalin Cellars, and it’s truly amazing the life still left in these bottles.
Still very much alive, with bright acidity and softened but present tannins giving it structure. Definite earth and mushroom on the nose, but primary notes of cherry come through clearly as well.
More red/black cherry on the palate, with some cooling mint/menthol/pine kind of notes as well.
One of the last of its kind, and a pleasure to drink.
