2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del…

2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano

Was holding onto this bottle for a while, waiting for the right opportunity to enjoy it.

Decided this would be perfect for a lunch date with my wife at Cotogna in SF, especially given their menu.

Opened this up and gave it an hour-long decant before enjoying.

It did initially have a bit of VA, but that blew off with air, thankfully, since I'm sensitive to VA.

This is still drinking quite young.

Great acidity and rusticness here.

Notes of sour cherry, blueberry, eucalyptus, rosemary, maybe some cassis as well?

The wine evolved nicely over the course of lunch and had some nice complexity with a rather long finish.

This also developed some slight savoriness on the palate as well.

Of all the dishes, this paired really well with a simple pizza margherita, although I can imagine this going really well with a truffle risotto as well.

Was sad to see the bottle go, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think an hour decant is the right starting point for this.

I truly believe this wine has a long way to go and could get even better with age!

93 points.
