The Artist (2011) is a brilliant and nostalgic homage to black-and-white silent cinema. Set in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932, it chronicles the transition from silent to sound film and is itself shot in the style of a period silent picture. That year it rightly won both critical and popular acclaim, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.
