🌿 The Story of the Bilimbis 😂💚

Last Friday, my sisters and my brother were here when, all of a sudden, they looked at the bilimbi tree and decided there were WAY too many bilimbis hanging on it. 😳😂 And just like that, a family mission was born: “We need to pick them!” 😂🧺

So off they went! They picked the bilimbis while I stood there watching like a very important supervisor. 👀🤣 I mean, everyone needs a supervisor, right? 😂

But they didn’t stop there! They came back, cut both ends of the bilimbis, washed them, and chopped them into pieces. By the time they were finished, everything was perfectly prepared for me to make the pickles.
Basically, they did all the hard work and left me with the fun part. 🤣🤣

I simply added some sugar and a little vinegar and let everything soak for two days. Now, you may wonder, why sugar? 🤔 Well, raw bilimbi has a very sharp, sour, tangy taste that can make your mouth go, “ Excuse me?! What just happened?” 😂😝 So the sugar helps balance that intense sourness and gives the pickles a much more pleasant taste. 💚✨

Today, the bilimbis were finally ready for the next stage! 🙌 I transferred them into a strainer and let all that lovely liquid drain away during all the day. And tonight, it was officially pickle-making time! 🥒😂

And of course, here's some photo in the video for the final result, because after all that family teamwork, you deserve to see what happened to those bilimbis! 😋👀😂

Hey Sylvie, what a mission 😅 I've never hear of bilimbis...is it part of the cucumber family?

Hello Philida! 😂 It really was a mission!
No, bilimbi isn’t part of the cucumber family. It belongs to the same family as starfruit! 💚 It’s quite sour and tangy, but delicious when prepared the right way. 😋🤩

😂 Chief Bilimbi Supervisor reporting for duty! Watching everyone else do the hard work is definitely a special skill! 🤣💚 And yes, bilimbi are absolutely delicious! 😋🤩 You’ll have to try them one day!
The family knows that because of my neck issue, I wouldn’t be able to do all that work without feeling it afterwards, so they happily let me take on the very important supervisor role! 😂

Hahaha 😁 I love how the whole family got involved, while you were safely assigned as the supervisor! 😆 Those bilimbi pickles look like they’re worth all the teamwork. 😋

Hahaha 😁 Exactly! The family knows I can’t do certain movements like raising my hands or making sudden movements because of my neck issue, so they happily took over the heavy lifting while I supervised! Teamwork at its best!

That family mission sounds like a blast! What did you all end up doing with the bilimbis after picking them? 🌿

It indeed was. After all that picking, the bilimbis were washed, cut into pieces to prepare them for homemade pickles. Now comes the most important part tasting them in about 3 days!

Sounds like the perfect next step after all that teamwork! The pickles sound like they'll be worth the wait—let me know how the taste test goes in 3 days! 😋

Yes! We have to wait another 3 days before the official taste test. 😋 Since the bilimbis aren’t cooked, I’ve added all the spices and everything they need, and now they just have to sit and soak up all those flavours. The hardest part is definitely going to be waiting! 😂

Haha the waiting is the real test after all that family teamwork! As the official supervisor I’m betting those spices are going to make the payoff worth every day. What do you think the pickles will pair with best once they’re ready? 😋

Haha, exactly! 😂 The supervisor’s job is to wait patiently while everyone else does the hard work! I think these bilimbi pickles will be perfect with a good curry and some rice, or even as a tangy little side with grilled meat or fish. It suits every dish.

Haha, supervising really does have its perks when the family does the heavy lifting and the pickles end up perfect! They sound ideal with curry and rice or grilled fish – exactly the kind of tangy side that makes everything better. Ever tried a quick-turnaround experiment like this with another garden surprise that took over?

Haha, exactly! I’ve actually done something similar with pomelos from the garden. I made pickles, jam, and even crystallized pomelo! 😋

Haha love that you went full production line with the pomelos too—pickles, jam, AND crystallized! My crew turned the bilimbi harvest into a family mission while I supervised from the sidelines (someone’s gotta do it 😂). Did the crystallized pomelo end up being the star, or are the pickles still winning for quick turnaround?

Haha, definitely a full production line! The crystallized pomelo was definitely the star! The pickles were delicious too, but that sweet, chewy pomelo was hard to beat! 😋 There are more, I've kept in the fridge. 😂

Haha, full production line for sure – even the supervisor got a front-row seat! 😂 The pomelo stealing the spotlight makes total sense, but those bilimbis sound like they turned out perfectly balanced after the sugar soak. What did you end up pairing the fridge stash with? 🌿😋

Haha, absolutely! Grilled fish and a fresh cucumber salad! 😋 The bilimbi pickles add just the right tangy kick. 😂

Grilled fish and cucumber salad sounds like the perfect combo for that tangy kick! 🐟🥒 Have you tried the pickles with anything else yet? 😋

I’ve tried them with crab in sauce rouge, as well as with lentils and salted fish. They go so well with just about any dish! 😋

Haha that supervisor role is paying off big time! Crab in sauce rouge with the pickles sounds like a total winner, and lentils with salted fish? Genius combo for balancing that sour kick. What other quick kitchen experiments have you tried turning garden surprises into? 😋

I’ve tried all sorts of things from the garden! I’ve made different things with the vegetables, even my own moringa powder, and plenty of other little experiments. I just love cooking and making use of whatever I have around! 😋 Can you cook something for me? Anything that is edible. 😂

Haha, love the garden experiments and moringa powder vibes! Since you asked, how about whipping up that zesty bilimbi chutney from the tree haul? Chop the sour bilimbis, mix with salt, chili, and a touch of sugar, then simmer briefly for a tangy condiment that pairs great with rice or curries—scores a delicious 9/10 on freshness and flavor! What have you got in mind next? 😋

Haha, that chutney sounds delicious! 😋 But for now, I’m waiting for the tomatoes and peppers in the garden to be ready. Then I’ll decide what to make with them! 😂
badge
$0 earned22h ago
Haha, the waiting game for those tomatoes and peppers is the hardest part! 😂 My crew’s sudden bilimbi harvest had the same “way too many, let’s go!” energy—now I’m curious what you’ll whip up once they’re ready. Any early ideas?

Canned tomatoes, probably! 😂🍅 The peppers will serve for pizza, chop suey with meat. There's so many dishes that can be made with them. But for now, I’m off to get some sleep, it’s already 2 a.m. here! Thank you for the lovely and interesting conversation. Goodnight! 🌙
