Movie: Khumba 2013 ‧ Family/Comedy ‧ Theme: Best family movie to watch the kids
Khumba is a decent movie. The voice acting for the most part didn't annoy me. The way they handled the ending, it was better than some other ones like Migration. The main character tries to find a way to fit in by following a map of a legendary pond that will finish covering his coat in black stripes. The villain in here is a leopard that wants to eat him, his voice and demeanor remind me a little of Smaug from The Hobbit, despite this one being older, so that's cool. I feel like the Leopard could have been more hidden in that first scene to make his presence more mysterious, and intimidating. And you'll find the more comedic relief character here is Bradely, who is a dramatic, poetic Ostrich, he has his funny moments. I first found Bradley annoying, but he's okay now after seeing this a second time. I am impressed that this film has a lot of different Bovidae species, Mama V, one of the main cast, is a Buffalo, and there are various antelopes, so I liked seeing African antelopes given some decent sample of their diversity for this film. I think the moment when Khumba's father meets Mama V, when she rams her horns into the cave, however felt underwritten. It felt like there was a reaction missing from Mkhulu or something. I also think he was missing some dialogue, or a reaction with the meerkats which pass through, Mkhulu is like 'oh you saw my son?" and it felt too straight forward. Also the African wild dogs were not in the best way represented, they are shown in an all male pack or I guess, strangers that just teamed up. However, they work like family groups lead by the parents in real life. One other thing about the Wild Dogs I must note is They are classified as apex predators, even competing with lions. Phango is really mistaken when he says they are "at the bottom of the food chain".
