My Biggest Rational Fear is... a Road Trip.

It isn't one simple thing; it's the terrifying combination of fears that happen when I travel.

At its core, it’s a rational fear of the 'ripple effect' —the fact that my safety on the road depends entirely on the decisions of strangers. One person checking a text, one bad move, and everything changes.

This rational fear then gets amplified by my other phobias. Every tunnel becomes a trap (thanks, claustrophobia ), and every mountain highway or bridge becomes a terrifying drop (hello, acrophobia ).

It's a fear that's genuinely terrifying because the danger is real, and I have zero control over the biggest risk: other people. 👻

It's easy to feel isolated in this fear, but the truth is I'm not. With nearly 80% of drivers admitting to 'accident anxiety' and millions more sharing my fear of heights and enclosed spaces, it turns out I'm just in the part of the Venn diagram where all those common fears meet. And statistically, that's a very crowded place to be. So if you're one of the millions who hate heights, one of the millions who hate tunnels, or one of the vast majority who rationally fear other drivers—you are not alone. I'm right there with you. 👻 #YouAreNotAlone

I completely understand your fear. 😔

On the highway we are at the mercy of others. We never know what they are doing while driving. I only feel safe when I am the driver, I am used to that. I don't trust anyone.
The narrow roads near the ravines and the tunnels scare me.

Nowadays, driving is done in such a way that you have to think with the driver of the other car and you never have priority, even if it is according to the traffic rules!!

I understand you very well, Sandra. Trucks on highway make me really anxious when I overtake them. I always think: what if the driver has fallen asleep and now he's drifting into my lane, about to crush me against the guardrail... it's terrifying.

Thank you so much for sharing that! That is the perfect example of the 'ripple effect' I was talking about. It's that terrifying 'what if' where you have zero control. It's so reassuring to know I'm not the only one whose brain goes there. Definitely not alone in this! 🤍
