There Be Dragons (2011): A Story of "Secret" Betrayals
Devastating ending, well, that is if you're in the shoe of the journalist who's writing a book on a saintly man before canonization. In the movie, we find out about a few people involved in the Spanish Civil War, and that includes Josemaria Escriva (a would be saint) and Manolo Torres (the journalist's father). This film is based on true events but it is definitely a work of fiction. Don't expect any magic or anything much about the saint's life just because the word dragon is in the title. Lol. If you know euphemisms then you will get it.
I for one never expected anything fantasy or supernatural based on the trailer. Still it gives an accurate depiction of how humanity can sink so low, especially in times of war. I even think some people use war as an excuse to be cruel to others. When you have too many unconfessed/unrepented venial sins you will not hesitate to commit mortal or grave sins anymore. You'll just do more and more evil deeds like it's not immoral. Such is the reality that most people just never give much thought. How could one even think like that when most of us aren't even aware of such things? But in spite of that, there's hope, however small. That's what the film shows us.
It also really solidifies, for me, the reason why priests rarely wear their cassocks or clerical shirts out in public. On another note, only thing I found weird in the movie is some female who talked to Josemaria. In another scene that female is seen as a statue. Oh come on. Doesn't seem like Mother Mary or a female saint at all.
Suffice it to say it is mildly disappointing in a Christian sense. Don't watch it if you're looking for religious content. Feel free to watch if you like period stories about life, humanity and introspection or parallelisms in our own lives. It's more human than religious. "Safe" to watch if you're not a Christian too. However, I will give the movie a rating of 6 over 10 stars. It's not bad, but it's not really good either. I do admire the actors but the prosthetics on the "old man" is obviously lacking.
