In high school, we were lucky enough to study the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, the First World War, the
Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, essentially, the emergence and preservation of liberty, equality and human rights. BBC TV aired All Quiet on the Western Front in 1980, when we were studying WWI, and made compulsive viewing. After all, the First World War ended in 1918 and was still fresh in people’s minds in 1930.
