I live in Retreat, a suburb of Cape Town City in South Africa. Did you know Cape Town is the oldest colonial city in South Africa. In 1652, the Dutch East India Company established a supply station there under Jan Van Riebeeck. From this settlement, many other towns and developments in SA grew, which is why Cape Town became known as the "Mother City"
People also jokingly say we earned the nickname because everything seems to happen 'later', like the City takes its time. Also in Afrikaans they call it "slaapstad" (sleepy city) because life here is seen as more relaxed and slower paced compared to other cities.
