The plot of the film is brief:
Phil Cope (Malcolm Terris), the manager of the English national football team, unexpectedly suffers a heart attack.
The English Football Association (FA) is looking for a new manager to replace him.
Most candidates turn down the position, and the English Football Association (FA) is forced to offer his place to the untalented Mike Bassett (Ricky Tomlinson), who accepts. Bassett makes several poor decisions and loses his first two matches as England manager. Bassett is doomed to a quick departure when he is given a chance to redeem himself after his team surprisingly qualifies for the World Cup.
The team must prove its mettle against the Brazilian national team in the World Cup final.
The film also features football legend Pelé.
