Picked this bottle up a few months ago and a lovely occasion meant I got to drink it sooner than expected.
Popped and poured, this led with a delightfully complex and concentrated nose of toffee, butter, candied walnuts, vanilla, and a touch of curry spices. On the palate, it was a real journey for the tastebuds. Honeyed dates, raisins, honeycomb, toasted almonds, candied ginger, and after 20 minutes in the glass, Asian preserved plums. Medium plus acidity, medium body, and a viscosity that luxuriously coats the tongue. Seemingly endless finish of over 3 minutes, which was a treat.
Just so incredibly profound and balanced. Since visiting the Chateau last year and tasting the 2016 on site (my first ever D’Yquem), I kept looking forward to the next time I’d have it. I recall right after the visit we went to the Maison du Sauternes, a shop run by the association of Sauternes winegrowers. Wanting to buy some Sauternes home, we asked what the closest thing to D’Yquem was. “There is nothing like D’Yquem”, was the answer.
Having had quite a few first growth Sauternes and excellent Tokaji since, I can’t disagree. #food #drink source
