Water Shortage 🚰

How I Will Prepare for a Water Shortage
I will prepare for a water shortage by planning how to manage my daily activities with less water. For example, I will prioritize essential tasks such as cooking and personal hygiene, postpone activities that require a lot of water, and keep a small emergency supply for unexpected interruptions. I will also make sure I have basic hygiene products, such as hand sanitizer and disposable wipes, in case water becomes difficult to access. Living in Mauritius, this situation has reminded me not to take water for granted and to be ready to adapt when necessary.

Three important preparedness tips
1. Store water safely. Keep clean water in food-grade containers with secure lids. Store enough drinking water for each family member and, where possible, keep a separate supply for cooking and basic hygiene. Follow official local advice about recommended quantities and storage.
2. Save every drop. Take shorter showers, turn off taps when brushing your teeth, repair leaks, and reuse suitable water, for example, water used to rinse vegetables can be used to water plants. Never reuse water that could contaminate food or drinking supplies.
3. Prepare an emergency water plan. Keep clean containers ready for water collection, monitor official announcements about supply interruptions, and identify reliable sources of safe water. If water safety is uncertain, follow public-health guidance on treatment before drinking it.

My personal thoughts
What worries me most is that water is not a luxury, it is a basic necessity. Without it, families struggle to cook, wash, maintain hygiene, and carry out even the simplest daily tasks. The latest official updates show how serious the situation has become. On 6 October 2026, Mare-aux-Vacoas Reservoir stood at just 35.9% of capacity.

I am also deeply concerned about the anger and frustration growing in our communities all over the island. Recent reports describe protests over water shortages in Camp-Levieux, Rose-Hill, (the place I live) including serious clashes and a woman being shot by a police sergeant for no reason.

What is the one thing people often overlook when preparing for this type of emergency?
I think people often overlook checking on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those who may struggle to collect or store water. Preparing is important, but so is making sure nobody in our community is left behind. We’re all in this together.

Thank you so much for your kind and compassionate words, Philida. Clean water is a basic human necessity, and it’s heartbreaking to think that anyone, especially our elderly and most vulnerable neighbors, should have to struggle for it. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness and looking out for one another can make the biggest difference. Let’s continue to spread awareness, show compassion, and remind each other that no one should ever be forgotten or left behind. Together, we can make a difference. πŸ™β€οΈπŸš°

I truly realize how fortunate I am not to have to face these kinds of struggles... You're right, water is something we often take for granted until we see how deeply it affects people’s lives when it becomes scarce.
I truly hope the situation improves soon and that people can find solutions together with compassion and solidarity. πŸ™πŸ’§πŸ©΅

Absolutely, my dear Dana. πŸ™πŸ©΅ We often realise the true value of the simplest necessities only when they are missing. I sincerely hope things improve soon. Thanks God, I'm not personally facing this situation, but I'm so sad for those people having to deal with it.
