Chateau Suduiraunt 1997

Mother in law is in town and I know she has a soft spot for Sauternes wine, so I pulled this out of the cellar and let her choose between this and chateau clos haut-petraguey 2001. She chose the former.

Both were sourced from my late uncle’s cellar.

The color isn’t quite as spectacularly amber as I’d expect from a nearly 30 year old vintage. In fact to 2001 was significantly darker.

My smell is a quite diminished due to a minor cold so won’t have a nose portion of my notes.

Intense marmalade, a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Honeysuckle on the backside. Texture is syrupy but not as viscous as other Sauternes I’ve had (even from this producer).

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Good Sauternes producers will always turn out good, no matter if the vintage is deemed subpar.
