I chose to present The Wind Rises ( Kaze Tachinu ) because it’s a deeply personal and beautifully crafted film that explores the complexities of dreams, ambition, and the impact of war. Unlike Miyazaki’s more fantastical works, this film is rooted in real history, focusing on Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of the Japanese Zero fighter plane during World War II . What I find fascinating is how the film balances the beauty of pursuing one’s dreams with the ethical dilemmas that come with it, creating a powerful emotional narrative.
The Wind Rises also resonated with me due to its stunning animation and its ability to evoke a sense of both hope and sorrow. Miyazaki’s ability to humanize Jiro’s struggles and desires while portraying the devastating consequences of war is what makes this film so impactful.
